Integrity インテグリティ

いつの頃からだろうか、ツイッターの友人たちが　”integrity” という言葉について話し合っていた。その言葉は何か人の性質を示すらしいのだけれど、わたしも人の性質としての意味は初めて聞いたためよく理解ができず、その議論に混じる機会も逸してしまって遠巻きに眺めていた。

 

図書館がどこの国にいても大好きで、とにかく気の向くままにランダムに本を取り出してみる。アメリカへの交換留学時、信じられないほどの田舎で文化の届かない高校の図書館でも、何かを探してぶらついていた。写真コーナーに、Diorの本が置いてあった。Dior って？裏のカードに貸し出された跡もなく、誰も開いたことのないよい写真集。開いてみると、オハイオのジーンズ＆Tシャツ世界を離れ、パリを舞台にウエストがくびれたドレスに小さな帽子をかぶる女性達が生きるエレガンスに、時間を忘れてたゆたっていた。（帰国後、幸運にもインターネットが生まれたので私は海外の古本屋から、タイトルを頼りにその本を20年越しに手にいれることができた。今でも宝物だ。）文化の乾きを癒そうと、私はDiorのエレガンスをごくごくと飲んだ。

話はそれたようで、実はそれていない。図書館はそんな風に、ただブラウジングするだけで時に新しい扉を開けてくれる。

友人たちが話しているのを遠巻きに眺めながら、”integrity” という言葉を頭の片隅においていつのまにか生活するようになった。そしてある日アデレードの図書館の児童書ではたとみつけた、”Integrity”がタイトルとなっている本を。

最初に思ったのは、小学校低学年向けの児童書の本のタイトルになるほど、人の性質を表す一般的な言葉なのだ、ということ。それなのに今まで其の言葉を全く使わずに生きてきたではないか。

書籍シリーズ”Values”という中の一冊らしく、他タイトルを眺めてみると、それがどのくらい一般的な言葉なのか感覚的にわかった。他には “Fairness”　”Helpfulness”　”Responsibility”　”Honesty”　”Kindness”　”Respect”　”Tolerance”….　　といったタイトルが並んでいる。公平性、思いやり、責任、正直さ、優しさ、敬意、寛容さ… そして、「インテグリティ」。

一体、どんな価値観なのだろう。首尾一貫性？一本通った、という日本語もあるが、この言葉が表す性質は全くそれだけではないようだ。

以下書籍の本文とわたしなりの和訳を載せておく。

本当は例文とともに写真が示されているので、文字だけでは一見意味が通じにくい箇所があるかもしれないが、だいたいの部分はそのまま理解できる。

Values

Values are the things you believe in. They guide the way:
you think
you speak
you behave.
Values help you to behave well when you go shopping.
Values help you to decide what is right and what is wrong.
They also help you to live your life in a meaningful way.

Values help you to follow the rules when you go tenpin bowling.

価値感とはあなたが何を信じるかです。

価値感はあなたが考え、話し、行動することを導きます。

価値観は、例えば、お買い物に行った時にどう行動するとよいかを示します。

価値観は何が正しくて何が間違っているかを見分ける際に役立ちます。
人生を有意義にすごすためにも必要です。

価値観は、例えばボーリングに行った際にルールに従うことを教えてくれます。

Integrity

Integrity is meaning what you say. It is making sure that your words and behaviour match.

People who say they are fair should invite everyone to play.

Integrity is also knowing what is right and what is wrong.

It is having the courage to do what is right.
Telling a teacher if you see that others are not following the rules shows courage.

インテグリティ

インテグリティとはあなたが話すことを本気で意味しているか、ということです。あなたの行動と言葉が確かに合っているか、ということです。

自分たちをフェアだという人々は、皆を一緒に遊ぼうと誘うはずです。

インテグリティは何が正しくて何が間違っているかを知ることでもあります。

正しいことをする勇気を持つことです。

他の人がルールに従っていないことを先生に伝えることは、勇気ある行為です。

People with integrity

People with integrity share their opinions with others.
They do not hide or change their opinions to get rewards. They share their opinions even if others disagree with them.

Some people share their opinions by writing letters to student magazines.

People with integrity are honest with themselves and others. They tell the truth to their family, friends and neighbours.

People with integrity admit to making mistakes, and then apologise.

インテグリティのある人

インテグリティのある人は、自分の考えを他の人と分かち合います。
評価されるために自分の意見を隠したり、変えたりしません。他の人がたとえ賛成しなかったとしても、その意見を伝えます。

学級新聞に手紙をかいて自分の意見を知らせる人もいます。

インテグリティのある人は自分にも他人にも正直です。家族や友人、近隣の人々に本当のことを話します。

インテグリティのある人は、自分の過ちを認め、謝ります。

Acting with integrity with family

Family members act with integrity by being open and honest. They do not hide how they are feeling or what they are doing.

People with integrity tell family members if they feel worried.

Family members also act with integrity by keeping promises. They do what they promise, even if it is something they do not enjoy.

Keeping a promise to play a game with a younger family member shows integrity.

家族とインテグリティをもって接する

家族へインテグリティをもって接する方法はオープンに正直であることです。どう感じているか、何をしているかを家族から隠しません。
インテグリティのある人は何かが心配な場合は家族へ話します。

インテグリティをもって家族と接するために約束を守ります。約束したことを、たとえそれが楽しいことでなくとも、行います。

妹や弟とゲームで遊ぶ約束を守ることは、インテグリティがあります。

Acting with integrity with friends

People with integrity encourage their friends to do the right thing.
They support their friends but always stay true to their own values.

Encouraging a friend to practise playing her violin shows integrity.

People with integrity spend time doing things that are important to them.
They enjoy having some friends who understand and care about their hobbies and sports.

Good friends will listen when you talk about your interest in nature.

友達とインテグリティを持って接する

インテグリティのある人は、友人に正しいことを励まします。
友人を支え、そしていつも自分の価値観に正直にいます。

友人にバイオリンの練習をするよう励ますことはインテグリティを表すことです。

インテグリティのある人は自分にとって重要なことに時間を使います。

彼らは、自分の趣味やスポーツを理解してくれて、配慮してくれる友達を持ちます。

良い友達は自分が興味をもって話すことに耳を傾けてくれます。

Acting with integrity with neighbours

People act with integrity by being tolerant of their neighbours. They do not judge new neighbours before they get to know them.

People with integrity get to know their neighbours.

People also act with integrity by saying what they want for their neighbourhood. They may want more parks and bicycle tracks.

Some people march to show they care about the natural environment in their neighbourhood.

近隣の人々とインテグリティを持って接する

インテグリティのある人は、近隣の人々と、寛容に過ごします。知り合う前から彼らを判断することはしません。

インテグリティのある人は、近隣に何が必要か話します。駐車場や自転車用レーンが必要かもしれません。

ある人々は近隣の自然環境を守りたいと表明するためにマーチすることもあります。

Ways to act with integrity

There are many different ways to act with integrity with your family, friends and neighbours. Deciding what you like and dislike is a good way to start acting with integrity.

Different people like different television shows.

Living by your values is another good way to act with integrity. Standing up for what you believe also shows integrity.

Raising your hand when you agree with someone is standing up for what you believe.

インテグリティを持って行動する
インテグリティを持って家族や友人、近隣の人々と行動するのには様々な方法があります。

何が好きか、嫌いかを決めるのはインテグリティを持って行動することの第一歩です。

人によって好きなテレビのショーは違います。

自分の価値観をもって生きることは、インテグリティを持って行動することのもう一つの方法です。自分が信じることのために立ち上がることは、インテグリティを表すことになります。

例えば誰かの意見に賛成するときに手を挙げることは、自分の信じることのために立ち上がることと言えます。

Deciding what you like and dislike

Deciding what you like and dislike is one way to act with integrity.
People with integrity choose to do activities they like instead of activities other people like.

You will enjoy reading more if you choose books that interest you.

People with integrity do not waste time or money on things they dislike, They do not wear clothing they dislike in order to fit in.

People with integrity sometimes choose to dress different than their friends.

何が好きか嫌いかを決める

あなたが何を好きか嫌いかを決めるのは、インテグリティを持って行動することの一つです。
インテグリティのある人は、ほかの人が好きなことをやるよりも自分が好きなことを選びます。

自分が興味がある本を読んだほうが、あなたは読書を楽しむはずです。

インテグリティのある人は、時間やお金を好きではないことに無駄にしません。ほかの人に溶け込むために自分の好きではない服を着ることはしないのです。
インテグリティのある人は、時にほかの友人たちと違う服装を選ぶことがあります。

Living by your values

Living by your values is another way to act with integrity . This means knowing what your values are and how important they are to you.

If kindness is important to you, you will be kind to all people and animals.

People with integrity use their values to help them make decisions. This makes it easier for them to behave in a way that matches their values.

People use the value of courage to help them decide whether to try new activities.

自分の価値観をもって生きる

自分の価値観を持って生活することは、インテグリティをもって行動することのもう一つの方法です。これは、自分の価値観は何か、それがなぜ自分にとって大切なのかを知ることです。

もし優しさがあなたにとって大切ならば、ほかの人々や動物たちに優しくするでしょう。

インテグリティのある人は、自分の価値観を、何かを決断する時に用います。これは自分の価値観に沿って行動する手助けをします。

人は勇気の価値観を何か初めての事に取りくむ時に用います。

Standing up for what you believe

Standing up for what you believe shows integrity.
You can stand up for what you believe by telling other people your opinions. You can also listen to the opinions of others to show respect.

Telling someone why you think forests are important is standing up for what you believe.

You can also stand up for what you believe by taking action. People who believe bullying is wrong can tell a teacher if they see bullying.
Telling a teacher when you see someone being bullied shows integrity.

信じることのために立ち上がる

自分の信念のために立ち上がることはインテグリティを表すことです。
ほかの人々に、自分の意見を伝えることで信念を示すことができます。
ほかの人の意見を聞いて、相手に敬意を示すこともできるでしょう。

人々になぜ森が大切か伝えることは、自分の信念にのためにたちあがることです。

行動することで、自分の信念のために立ち上がることにもなります。いじめが良くないことだと知っている人は、いじめを見た時に先生へ伝えます。
先生に誰かがいじめられていることを伝えることは、インテグリティを表すことです。

Doing the right thing

People with integrity do the right thing for themselves and others . They do the right thing even if doing the wrong thing would be quicker or easier.

You show integrity when you take the time to do your homework properly.

People with integrity do the right thing even if doing the wrong thing would help them.
They tell the truth even if lying would help them stay our of trouble.

Telling the truth about why you did not clean your room shows integrity.

正しいことをする

インテグリティのある人は、自分のため、また他人のために正しいことをします。彼らはもし間違っていることのほうが簡単で手っ取り早かったとしても、正しいことをします。

自分の宿題をやるために時間をとることは、インテグリティを表すことです。
インテグリティのある人は、間違っていることがたとえ自分を助けることだとしても正しいことをします。
嘘をつくことで問題を避けられたとしても真実を伝えるのです。

なぜ自分が部屋を綺麗にしなかったのか本当のことを伝えることは、インテグリティのある行為です。

Being a good friend

Being a good friend also shows integrity. People with integrity are loyal to their friends. They do to say mean things to their friends or about their friends.

Gossiping about a friend shows a lack of integrity.

People with integrity listen to their friends. They ca be trusted to keep secrets. They only tell secrets to stop someone from getting hurt.

Good friends know when to keep a secret and when to tell.

よい友達であること

よい友達であることも、インテグリティを表すことです。
インテグリティのある人は友人に誠実に接します。意地悪のなことをいったり、陰口をたたいたりしません。

誰かのことを陰で噂することは、インテグリティを欠く行為です。

インテグリティのある人は友人の声に耳を傾けます。友人の秘密を守ります。
誰かを傷つけないようにする時だけ、秘密を話します。
よい友人同士はいつ秘密を守り、いつ伝えるかを知っているのです。

Not following the crowd

Not following the crowd is an important way to show integrity. This means not changing your appearance or values o be accepted by others.

A person with integrity will not steal when his friends tell him to.

People with integrity make decisions for themselves and do not copy other people. They do not let others talk them into doing things they do not agree with.

People with integrity do not let friends make them visit unsuitable internet site.

集団に従わない

集団に従わないことは、インテグリティを表す重要な方法です。これは、自分の姿や価値観を他の人に受け入れてもらうために変えない、ということです。

インテグリティのある人は、友人が何かを盗めと行った時にそれに従いません。
インテグリティのある人は自分で判断し、誰かを真似しません。意見が違う場合には、誰かに行動を説得されることもありません。

インテグリティのある人は、友人を不適切なインターネットサイトにアクセスするようにさせたりしません。

Personal set of values

There are many different values. Everyone has a personal set of values. This set of values guides people in big and little ways in their daily lives.

Integrity is an important value for people who help those in need in other countries.

個人の価値観
様々に異なる価値観があります。みなそれぞれに個人の価値観をもっています。
この価値観は人々の毎日の生活を、大なり小なり、導いています。

インテグリティは、他の国で困っている人を助けるためにも重要な価値観です。
